THE STORY OF THE LAKE

Orange Lake History

A shallow natural Florida lake where trophy-bass management, drought cycles and the literary landscape of Cross Creek meet.

Orange Lake is the largest lake in FWC's North Central Region and a shallow natural system linked to Newnans Lake through River Styx and Lochloosa Lake through Cross Creek.

Its dramatic water-level cycles and vegetation changes are part of the fishery's identity rather than side notes: drought can shrink access and habitat, while refilling and recovering vegetation can create exceptional fish growth.

Cross Creek on the east side of the lake is inseparable from Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, whose preserved homestead and farm landscape connect the modern fishing lake to one of Florida's best-known literary settings.

FWC now manages Orange Lake as a Fish Management Area with special trophy-bass rules intended to protect the lake's largest fish.
